What Is GHB?

GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) is a central nervous system depressant with both medical and non-medical contexts. Recreationally, it may produce relaxation, euphoria, increased sociability, reduced inhibitions, heightened sexual feelings, and sedation.

The effects of GHB can change considerably with the amount consumed, and the difference between desired effects and severe intoxication can be relatively small. This makes accurate identification and concentration particularly important when discussing liquid preparations.

Effects of GHB

Effects can include relaxation, euphoria, sociability, reduced inhibitions, drowsiness, impaired coordination, nausea, dizziness, confusion, and memory impairment. Greater exposure can cause profound sedation, unconsciousness, slowed or impaired breathing, coma, and death.

Combining GHB with other central nervous system depressants—particularly alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives—can substantially increase the danger of profound sedation and respiratory depression. Do not combine GHB with other substances. 

Frequent use can also result in physical dependence. Withdrawal after sustained heavy use can become medically serious and may require professional treatment.
