What is Microdosing LSD

LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a synthetic psychedelic, chemically distinct from psilocybin but acting on overlapping serotonin receptor pathways, and it’s historically the most extensively studied classic psychedelic. Research typically describes a microdose as roughly 10 to 15 micrograms, compared with a full recreational dose in the range of 100 micrograms or more.

LSD and psilocybin are consistently identified in survey research as the two most commonly microdosed substances, with study samples splitting fairly evenly between them depending on the population surveyed.

What does the Research Show?

The same core research from UBC Okanagan’s “Microdose.me” program applies here, since their major studies grouped LSD and psilocybin together under “classic psychedelics.” The November 2021 study in Scientific Reports, following more than 8,500 people across 75 countries, found microdosers of LSD and psilocybin combined reported fewer symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress than non-microdosers.

As with psilocybin, this needs to be weighed against placebo-controlled evidence. The same self-blinding citizen science study (191 participants) that complicated the psilocybin picture applies to LSD microdosing too, since it included both substances. There appeared to be no significant difference between the control group and microdosing group in that study.

There’s also a smaller, more specific body of neuroscience research worth noting: functional MRI studies looking at very low-dose LSD have found altered connectivity between the amygdala and cortical regions, correlated with self-reported mood changes in some participants. This is genuinely interesting mechanistic evidence, but it comes from a much smaller and more preliminary body of research.

As with psilocybin, it’s worth stating plainly rather than assuming: no Canadian or international data on LSD microdosing prevalence specifically among LGBTQ people currently exists.

Harm Reduction for Microdosing: Tips and Advice

Tolerance builds the same way it does with psilocybin. Rapid tolerance build-up with consecutive-day use is part of why structured on/off schedules are typically described in the research and community literature, rather than daily uninterrupted use.

The same drug-interaction cautions apply to classic psychedelics generally. A personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar I disorder, and combination with MAOIs or lithium, are relevant considerations regardless of which classic psychedelic is involved — discussing use with a health care provider is worthwhile given individual variation in how these interactions present.

Visual identification isn’t verification. Because blotter paper or liquid sold as LSD can’t be reliably distinguished by appearance from other substances — including, in some documented cases, other more dangerous research chemicals sold under the same name — sourcing and testing matter. Frequently Asked Questions

How is microdosing LSD different from microdosing mushrooms?

The underlying research is similar since major studies group them together as “classic psychedelics,” but LSD is typically sold on blotter paper with somewhat more consistent dosing potential than mushrooms, which vary naturally in potency by species and even individual specimen.

Does research show microdosing LSD helps with anxiety or depression?

Large observational studies suggest an association, but placebo-controlled research complicates this picture significantly, similar to the psilocybin findings — expectation effects appear to play a real role.

Can drug checking confirm LSD potency?

Some services can help confirm identity, and blotter/liquid forms may allow more consistent dosing than natural products, but testing capability varies by service and location.
